Alternative Formats

What is alternative format?
Alternative formats provide an alternative to standard print for those who cannot access the standard document. For example: a printed document is not accessible to a person who is totally blind, braille is not accessible to a person who does not know how to read braille and an electronic document is not accessible to a person who doesn't have a computer.

Providing alternative formats to your students involves two steps.
Firstly,
All published information (for example, your handbooks, reading lists etc) should include the strap-line: This document is available in alternative format upon request from *insert the relevant e-mail address*.

Secondly,
Keep a copy of the original Word document so that it can be easily modified if students put in a request. The accessibility of the format depends on a person's abilities and what resources are available.

What kind of alternative formats may be requested?
Requests may include:
An electronic version of a document that is generally accessed in hard copy
A Word version of a PDF
An Audio Version
Braille or
Large printed (for example 18 point or larger)

The Disability Service is responsible for assisting in the provision of alternative format materials in College.
